Potomac Heritage Trail

Theodore Roosevelt Island to Donaldson Run. This is an easy 3-hour, 6-mile loop along the shores of the Potomac. Meet at the North end of the parking lot by the pedestrian bridge. Note that the parking lot is accessible only from the northbound lanes of the GW parkway; or you can walk down to the lot from Rosslyn. Directions: From the Memorial Bridge and points south, take the GW parkway north to the Theodore Roosevelt parking lot on the right.

Potomac Overlook Park to Fort Marcy. This is a moderate 3-hour, 6-mile loop running down from the park to the PHT and then hiking North to Fort Marcy. While most of the hike is relatively level, there are steep climbs up and down at both ends of the hike. Meet in the Potomac Overlook parking lot. Directions: From I-495 take the GW Parkway southbound to exit for Rt. 123 southbound (toward Chain Bridge). At Rt. 120, Glebe Rd., turn right. Near top of hill, take right exit for Military Rd. and follow signs to Military Rd. After crossing cloverleaf over Rt. 120, turn left onto Military Rd., go 1.3 miles turn left onto Marcy Rd. Go to the end of the road (past tennis courts) to the park's parking lot.

Fort Marcy to Turkey Run Park. This is a moderate 3-hour, 6-mile loop with steep declines and inclines to and from the river at both ends of the hike. Meet in the parking lot. Note that the parking lot is accessible only from the northbound lanes of the GW parkway. Directions: From Rosslyn, take the GW Parkway northbound and turn right into park.

Turkey Run Park to Live Oak Drive. This is a moderate, 2-hour, 4-mile loop with steep declines and inclines to and from the river. From the park, the hike goes up river to Live Oak Dr. which is just past the American Legion Bridge and returns. Park and meet in Turkey Run Park lot C-1. Directions: From I-495, take the GW Parkway southbound for approximately 2 miles to the park entrance. From points south, take the GW Parkway northbound to the park entrance.

Rating C. 4 mile circuit hike in Arlington. Hike will start from Potomac Overlook and go down to the Potomac River. Historic sites can be seen along the way. Some climbing but not too strenuous.

Hiking along the C&O Canal. Listed here because the hike starts from the Rosslyn Metro. A relatively flat 10 mile hike along the C&O Canal from Rosslyn and return. Bring lunch and water.
Hiking on Theodore Roosevelt Island. We'll take a brisk 4 mile hike on sidewalks and bike trails to Roosevelt Island. We will then hike the scenic trails around the island, walk past a water fall, and then take the Metro back to the start point.

Tour hilly Arlington National Cemetery and the Women in Military Service Memorial on this moderate 7 miler. Meet inside the Cemetery Visitor Center at the Information Desk. (The Cemetery has a Metro station and a pay parking lot).
Hiking from Arlington National Cemetery into DC. Rating C. Explore DC on this 8.6 mile hike. We will start at the Arlington National Cemetery, go through Rosslyn, around Theodore Roosevelt Island, across the Potomac River, and through Georgetown, ending at Foggy Bottom. Shorter option is only 4 miles to the Rosslyn Metro. Bring water, snacks, and money for return ride via Metro. W will stop for lunch at deli near Georgetown.

Hiking the Potomac Heritage Trail from Fort Marcy.
Rating C. This hike along the Potomac Heritage trail is an out-and-back to Fort Marcy starting from Turkey Run for a total of seven miles with a fair amount of up and down. Walking time is 3.5 hours at a moderate pace; allow time for snack at Ft Marcy. Take George Washington Memorial Parkway (either direction), turn off at entrance to Turkey Run Park, which is marked with a brown sign. Meet at first parking lot on left (Lot C-1) after entering Turkey Run Park.

Rating D. This is a 3.5 mile circuit at Turkey Run Park off the GW Parkway. Walk along the Potomac as well as Turkey Run. A (1+ mile each way) side trip to Dead Run is available to anyone interested.

Hiking around Lake Accotink from Wakefield Park.
Rating D. A 6.5 mile hike along Accotink Creek and around Lake Accotink. Mostly level, with small elevation change. To get to the meeting place take Beltway (495) Exit 54A West (Braddock Road). Take first right turn into Wakefield Park; go about .6 mile to large parking lot near the Recreation Center Building.
Hiking around Lake Accotink. Rating D. This will be a fast paced 4 mile walk around Lake Accotink - the terrain is mostly flat. Bring lots of water. Call if you need directions.

Rating B. 9 mile circuit hike with 1100’ elevation change. Hike will start near Camp Roosevelt on the Stephens Trail and the proceed to Kennedy Peak and return on the Massanutten Trail.
Hiking in the GWNF around Signal Knob. Rating A. A 10.6 mile circuit hike along Massanutten Mountain following the Big Blue Spur, Tuscarora, Little Passage, and Signal Knob Trails. Signal Knob offers a fine view of the Shenandoah Valley. Elevation change 1600 feet.

Hiking in the GWNF from Edinburg Gap to Mooreland Gap.
Rating A. PATC Map G. The hike will be a 16-mile circuit from Edinburg Gap to Mooreland Gap on the Taskers Gap and Massanutten Trails . Total elevation gain is 2900 feet.
Hiking in the GWNF from Edinburg Gap to Woodstock Gap.
Rating A. PATC Map G. The hike will be a 17-mile circuit hike from Edinburg Gap to Woodstock Gap on the Massanutten, Wagon Road, Peters Mill Run and Green Mountain Trails. Total elevation gain will be 3200 feet.
Hiking in the GWNF from Woodstock Gap to Strasburg Reservoir. Rating A. PATC Map G. The hike will be a 17-mile circuit hike from Woodstock Gap to Strasburg reservoir on the Massanutten and Tuscarora Trails. Total elevation gain will be 1600 feet.
Hiking in the GWNF. Rating A. PATC Map G. The hike will be a 17 mile circuit hike on the Sherman Gap, Bear Wallow, Massanutten, Shawl Gap and Tuscarora Trails. Total elevation gain will be 4600 feet.
Hiking in the GWNF along the Massanutten Mtn. East Trail. PATC Map G.Long hike: 11.9 mi., 3600 ft. ascent, 3350 ft. descent. Short hike: 8.2 mi., 2300 ft., ascent, 2050 ft. descent. Sweeping views of the Shenandoah Valley from the narrow crest of the Massannutten Mtn. ridge make this jaunt, deep in George Washington National Forest, memorable. We start from Rt. 613 on the east side of the mountain and ascend the Sherman Gap Trail to the ridgetop, where we hit the Massanutten Mtn. East Trail and follow it south to Veach Gap and the nearby Little Crease Shelter for lunch. Short hikers then descend the Veach Gap Trail to Rt. 774 in bucolic Fort Valley. Long hikers continue south along the ridge to Milford Gap, where they descend to Rt. 758.

Shenandoah National Park

Please be aware that there is a $10 per vehicle entrance fee for passenger cars. Not all hikes require vehicle entry to the park, but some hikes do have fees for parking. For a better view, I suggest hiking/driving North to South for views of sunrise and sunset. During the day, hike/drive South to North to have the sun behind you. Round trip hikes are to and from on the same route. Circuit hikes do not retrace steps. Hikes are listed alphabetically and then geographically by SNP trail map.

Hiking in the SNP -- Bluff Trail. Rating A. SNP entrance fee $10.00 per vehicle. A 13.5 mile circuit hike in the North section of SNP Beginning at trailhead parking lot near Range View Overlook, hiking north along the Bluff trail to Jenkins Gap where we will stop for lunch, then return south along the Appalachian Trail. Several nice views that look west over the Page valley are accessible from this section of the AT. Elevation gain is 2100'.
Hiking in the SNP -- Buck Hollow to Pass Mtn., SNP, A moderate to strenuous 10 miles up the Buck Hollow Trail to the AT with great views from Mary's Rock before returning via the Pass Mountain Trail.
Hiking in the SNP -- Catlett Mountain.
A moderate to strenuous 10 mile hike in central SNP passing old stone walls and beautiful streams.
Hiking in the SNP -- Compton Peak via Lands Run Falls. A moderate to strenuous 10 mile hike in northern SNP with great views and a seldom visited waterfall.
Hiking in the SNP -- Dark Hollow Falls.
A slow paced, moderate 6-8 miles (your choice) enjoying waterfalls, streams, and exquisite landscapes.
Hiking in the SNP -- Dickey Ridge. Rating A. An 11 mile (2600' elevation) in-and-out hike. We will ascend the Dickey Ridge Trail; use loop trails to visit Fox Hollow and Snead Farm; lunch at the Visitors center with its commanding view of the Blue Ridge and Massanutten Mountains; return on the Dickey Ridge trail.
Hiking in the SNP -- Double-Top Mountain. PATC Map 10. Long hike: 10 mi., 3150 ft. ascent, 2900 ft. descent. Short hike: 8.3 mi, 3150 ft. ascent, 2400 ft. descent. Starting from Rt. 662 on the East side of the Blue Ridge, we’ll climb the Graves Mill Trail and the Rapidan Rd. to the unmaintained Charlie Thomas (or Doubletop) Trail, and follow that across Doubletop’s twin summit overlooks to the Upper Dark Hollow Trail. The short hike descends that to Rt. 648; the long hike continues to the Rose River Fire Rd., ending on Rt. 670.
Hiking in the SNP -- Doyles River. SNP entrance fee $10.00 per vehicle. Many waterfalls are featured on this great hike in southern SNP. A moderate 8 miles.
Hiking in the SNP -- Hazel River.
Hike 11 moderate to strenuous miles along Hazel River. Visit White Rocks, Cave Falls, and old cabins.
Hiking in the SNP -- Jeremy’s Run/Knob Mountain. Rating A. SNP entrance fee $10.00 per vehicle. A 12 mile difficult circuit hike with an elevation change of 2600 feet. Jeremy’s Run is one of the most beautiful streams in the northern section of the Park. The trail cross the stream 14 times so be prepared.
Hiking in the SNP -- Little Devil's Stairs.
... A 5-9 mile, moderate hike. Driving Directions: From Washington Beltway I-495, take I-66 West to Gainesville. At Gainesville, take exit for US-29 South toward Warrenton. At Warrenton, follow US-29 business route (not bypass) to US-211 West. Turn right onto US-211 West toward Luray. Follow US-211 West for about 24 miles to the Covington River. Turn right onto VA-622 immediately after crossing Covington River. If you get to Sperryville, you've gone to far. Continue about 2 miles on VA-622 to bridge. After crossing bridge, turn left onto VA-614. Follow 614 to the end, about 3 miles, and park wherever you can.
Hiking in the SNP -- Mary's Rock via Buck Hollow. Rating A. An 11.5 mile hike with 2800 feet elevation gain. We will begin by hiking through the enchanting Buck Hollow region, crossing Skyline Drive and continuing on the Meadow Spring trail. We will stop for lunch at Mary's Rock, which is one of the best viewpoints in the park. From there, we will continue hiking north on the Appalachian Trail across Thornton Gap and on to Pass Mountain, and make our return by descending the Pass Mountain trail. There will be a short car shuttle between the Buck Ridge & Pass Mountain trailhead parking areas, both on Route 211.
Hiking in the SNP --
Nicholson Hollow/Short Mtn. PATC Map 10. Long hike: 9.2 mi., 2600 ft. ascent, 2450 ft. descent. Short hike: 7.6 mi., 2050 ft. ascent, 1900 ft. descent. We forge into wild Shenandoah backcountry. Starting at the settlement of Nethers, we all head up lovely Nicholson Hollow along the Hughes River. After a mile or so, short hikers veer off on the Hot-Short Mtn. Hazel Mtn. Trails around the eastern side of Short Mtn. to the Sams Ridge Trail, which they descend to the bus at Rt. 600. Long hikers take a more challenging route on the Hannah Run, Catlett Spur, and Hazel Mtn. Trails around the western side of Short Mtn. before descending the Sams Ridge Trail.
Hiking in the SNP -- Old Rag Mountain. A must-do classic, strenuous 8 mile hike with rock scrambling in SNP.
Hiking in the SNP -- Overall Run/Beecher Ridge. Rating B. A circuit hike of 7.5 miles, 2160’ elev. change. We start at Thompsons Hollow, follow the Overall Run trail & come back on Tuscarora Trail/Overall Run. The climb up Beecher Ridge is steep, but the views of the highest falls in the park make it worth the trip.
Hiking in the SNP -- Pass Mtn./Mary's Rock. PATC Map 9. Long hike: up to 11.3 mi., up to 3600 ft. ascent, up to 2350 ft. descent. Short hike: 7.9 mi., 2400 ft. ascent, 1150 ft. descent. Starting on the east side of the Blue Ridge at the intersection of Rts. 612 and 653, we climb the Thornton River and Hull School Trails to the Appalachian Trail. After lunch at Byrds Nest #4 shelter, we follow the AT south over Pass Mtn. to Panorama Restaurant at Thornton Gap, where short hikers stop. Long hikers can add a roundtrip climb on the AT to the spectacular overlook at Mary's Rock.
Hiking in the SNP -- Skyland to Crescent Rock. A moderate 8 miles on trails near Skyland with views from Stony Man, Millers Head, and Crescent Rock.
Hiking in the SNP -- South River Falls. SNP entrance fee $10.00 per vehicle. Shaded trail follows the South River through a deep gorge to a double cascade 70 foot water fall. It also passes through Kites Deadening, an area of former farm fields, and several cemeteries. Shortly after Kites Deadening there are views of Lewis Mountain, Hazeltop, Jones Mountain and Fork Mountain. Meet: Centreville Commuter Lot.
Hiking in the SNP -- Thornton Hollow. Rating A. A 12 mile hike with an elevation change of 1500 feet in northern section of Shenandoah National Park. We will follow the Thornton River trail, the AT and return via the Hull School trail.
Hiking in the SNP -- White Oak Canyon. A strenuous 8 miles going up White Oak Canyon and back down Cedar Run.

Hiking the Tuscarora Trail/ Sleepy Creek Wildlife Mgt. Area. PATC Map L. Long hike: 12.4 mi., 2200 ft. ascent, 1650 ft. descent. Short hike: 8 mi., 1750 ft. ascent, 750 ft. descent. This northbound trek on a stretch of the Tuscarora Trail that was relocated in 1998. The route takes us through the southern portion of West Virginia’s scenic Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area, an area not on the radar screen of many local hikers. Starting at Rt. 671 in VA, the re-routed trail circumvents around Shockeys Knob, then mostly follows the ridge line before a steep ascent to the Shanghai Beacon, a tower that adventurous (and brave) hikers can climb for a panoramic view. Short hikers follow the trail as far as Hampshire Grade Rd; long hikers proceed to the Dead Mule Trail to reach the bus at Third Hill Mtn. Rd.
