Sunday, May 21, 2006, 10:AM, Arlington VA 22202, Casual Hiking, Gravelly Point to Lincoln Memorial, Self/Group guided casual hike. || TOPO Map || An easy, 3-hour, 5-mile circuit with minimal change in elevation. Park and meet in the parking lot near the boat launch. From the parking lot, head upriver along the Mount Vernon Trail (MVT), past the Navy Marine Memorial, to and across the Memorial Bridge, to clockwise around the Lincoln Memorial, over to the Korean War Memorial, back toward the river along Independence Ave, turn left at 23rd St, to Ohio Dr SW, stay on the walkway next to the river as you proceed onto E Basin Dr SW, up to the 14th Street Bridge southbound via most convenient route, across the 14th Street Bridge along the sideway on the upriver side of the bridge, take the GW Parkway northbound exit, rejoin the MTV and proceed back to the parking lot at Gravelly Point. Directions: Gravelly Point parking lot is accessible only from the GW Parkway northbound (Southbound, circle through Reagan National Airport and head back up the GW Parkway). Gravelly Point is immediately past National Airport and before you reach the 14th Street Bridge. Lunch: Pack your own lunch to eat on the steps of the Reflection Pool.

Sunday, May 27, 2006, 10:AM, Washington DC 22207, Casual Hiking, Key Bridge to Milepost 0 and the WWII Memorial, Self/Group guided casual hike. || TOPO Map || An easy, 3-hour, 5-mile circuit with minimal change in elevation. Park and meet upriver end of K Street under the Whitehurst Freeway at the beginning of the Crescent Trail. Take the stairs up to the C&O Canal, walk downriver along the towpath, stay on the towpath (it will cross to the other side of the canal), proceed to milepost zero, turn right and walk down Rock Creek Parkway toward the Thompson Boathouse, stay on the trail leading down along the river towards the Kennedy Center, pass the KC and follow the trail up to the Lincoln Memorial, use crossing roadways, tour the LM, walk along the south side of the Refection Pool to the WWII Memorial, turn left on 17th Street, left at Constitution Ave, left to and through the Vietnam Memorial, back to the LM, back down to the river trail, past the KC, to and around the Thompson boathouse to the waterfront, to Tony & Joe’s for lunch, along the Georgetown waterfront, and back starting point. Directions: From M Street in Georgetown, turn onto Wisconsin Avenue headed to the river, turn right onto K Street and head to end of roadway. Lunch: Tony & Joe’s, 3000 K Street, NW, Washington DC 20007, . Its right on the Georgetown waterfront and you will walk right past it.

On this loop, everyone hikes at their own pace for 1.5-hours, turns around, and returns to the starting point no later than 1:pm. Park and meet in the parking lot just upriver from Chain Bridge. From the parking lot, walk back to the bridge and take the stairs down to the C&O Canal, walk upriver along the towpath to Cabin John Creek and return. Directions: From I-495 take the Clara Barton Parkway inbound to the parking lot on the right just before Chain Bridge. Lunch: Lappetito Restorante, 5105 MacArthur Blvd NW, Washington DC 20016, . From the parking lot, head in on the Parkway (it becomes Canal Rd as you pass Chain Bridge) take the first left onto Arizona Ave, turn right on Macarthur Blvd. The restaurant will be about 2-blocks down on Macarthur.

Sunday, June 18, 2006, 10:AM, Cabin John MD 20818, Casual Hiking, C&O Canal - Carderock 3-Hour Downriver Loop, Self/Group guided casual hike. || TOPO Map || This 3-hour, 6-mile loop to Cabin John Creek with minimal change in elevation. On this loop, everyone hikes at their own pace for 1.5-hours, turns around, and returns to the starting point no later than 1:pm. Park and meet in the parking lot near the restrooms as you enter the park. From the parking lot, use one of the convenient pathways to reach the canal, turn right and hike downriver to Cabin John Creek and return. Directions: From Virginia: cross the American Legion Bridge and take the first exit onto the Clara Barton Parkway at the Maryland end of the bridge. Keep to your left and head north on the parkway toward Great Falls. Take the first exit and turn left at the top of the ramp. Cross the bridge and turn right into Carderock Park. At the stop sign turn right and then a quick left into the parking lot. From Maryland head south on the outer loop of I-495 exit to the Clara Barton Parkway (last exit before crossing bridge) and follow directions above. Lunch: Market on the Boulevard Deli, Cabin John MD. Exit the park onto Clara Barton Parkway outbound, turn right at Macarthur Blvd, to Cabin John. Deli is on the left in a small shopping center as you enter Cabin John.

Sunday, June 25, 2006, 10:AM, Cabin John MD 20818, Casual Hiking, C&O Canal – Lower 2-Sections of the Billy Goat Trail, Self/Group guided casual hike. || TOPO Map || This 3-hour, 4-mile circuit with minimal change in elevation. Park and meet in the parking lot near the restrooms as you enter the park. This hike includes several rock scrambles and you may encounter muddy and/or slipper conditions so wear appropriate footwear. From the parking lot, find one of the trails going down to the river and scout this trail so that when you are hiking downriver you will recognize it as the turn off to get back to the parking lot. Then head back to the parking lot and use one of the convenient pathways to reach the canal, turn left and hike upriver, turn left onto the middle section of the Billy Goat Trail that is almost at the crossover bridge at Anglers Inn, follow this trail down to where it rejoins the C&O, proceed a little further downstream, turn right onto the lower section of the Billy Goat Trail, hike to the cutoff back to the parking lot. Directions: From Virginia: cross the American Legion Bridge and take the first exit onto the Clara Barton Parkway at the Maryland end of the bridge. Keep to your left and head north on the parkway toward Great Falls. Take the first exit and turn left at the top of the ramp. Cross the bridge and turn right into Carderock Park. At the stop sign turn right and then a quick left into the parking lot. From Maryland head south on the outer loop of I-495 exit to the Clara Barton Parkway (last exit before crossing bridge) and follow directions above. Sunday, July 2, 2006, 10:AM, Potomac MD 20854, Casual Hiking, C&O Canal – Anglers Inn to Great Falls, Self/Group guided casual hike. || TOPO Map || An easy 2-hour, 3.7-mile circuit with minimal change in elevation. Park and meet in the parking lot across from the Anglers Inn on MacArthur Blvd. Hike down to the canal and turn right to hike upriver to Great Falls, return by hiking down to the elevated bridge that crosses the canal, cross over the canal using this bridge and turn right to hike back to the parking lot along the Burm Rd. Directions: Take I-495 to exit 41 for Carderock/Glen Echo. Follow signs toward Carderock. Go past Carderock and turn left at the "T" onto MacArthur Blvd. Go approx. 1 mile to the parking lot on the left side of the road opposite Old Angler's Inn. Lunch: Hunters Inn, 10123 River Rd, Potomac MD 20854, . Turn left exiting the parking lot onto MacArthur Blvd, turn right onto Falls Rd and proceed to Potomac, turn right onto River Rd, restaurant will be on the left, but you will need to backtrack by turning left at next light and then a hard left into parking lot.

Sunday, July 9, 2006, 10:AM, Potomac MD 20854, Casual Hiking, C&O Canal – Great Falls 2-Hour Upriver Loop, Self/Group guided casual hike. || TOPO Map || An easy 2-hour, 4.7-mile loop to Swains Lock with minimal change in elevation. On this loop, everyone hikes at their own pace for 1-hour, turns around, and returns to the starting point no later than 12:pm. Park in one of the lots in Great Falls Park and be aware that there is a small entrance fee for the park. Meet at the Great Falls Tavern Visitors Center, cross over the canal and hike upriver to Swains Lock and return. Directions: From I-495 exit onto River Road westbound toward Potomac, in Potomac turn left onto Falls Rd, at the “T” with MacArthur Blvd, turn right into the entrance to Great Falls Park. Lunch: Renato Restaurant, 10120 River Rd, Potomac MD 20854, . Turn left exiting the park onto Falls Rd and proceed to Potomac, turn right into the shopping center just before you get to the traffic light at River Rd, the restaurant will be in the middle and at the back of where you enter the shopping center.

Park and meet at Swains Lock, cross over the canal and hike upriver to Penneyfield Lock and return. Directions: From I-495 exit onto River Road westbound toward Potomac, go through Potomac and watch for left turn onto Swains Lock Rd, park as available. From I-270 exit onto RT 28 at West Montgomery Ave, to left on RT 107 (Whites Ferry Rd) into Poolesville, and onto Whites Ferry. Lunch: Pack your own to eat at the end of the hike.

From points in Virginia, take RT 15 North from Leesburg, turn right on Whites Ferry Rd, take ferry across Potomac (per car fee approx. $5). From the parking area, proceed to the canal and hike upriver for 2-hours and return. Directions: From I-270 exit onto RT 28 at West Montgomery Ave, to left on RT 107 (Whites Ferry Rd) into Poolesville, and onto Whites Ferry. Lunch: Pack your own to eat along the way.

On this loop, everyone hikes at their own pace for 1.5-hours, turns around, and returns to the starting point no later than 1:pm. Park and meet at the parking area off of Mouth of Monocacy Rd. From the parking area, proceed to the canal and hike downriver for 1.5-hours and return. Directions: From I-495 take I-270 towards Frederick, take exit 6B onto Rt. 28 (W Montgomery Ave) westbound. Follow Rt. 28 through Dickerson and turn left onto Mouth of Monocacy Rd., follow it to the end and to an unimproved parking area for access to the canal and to the Monocacy River. Lunch: El Mexicano, 12150 Darnestown Rd, Gaithersburg MD 20878, . From the parking area, head out to Rt. 28 southbound, the restaurant will be on the right just after crossing Quince Orchard Rd. and in the shopping center behind the McDonalds.

Follow Rt. 28 through Dickerson and turn left onto Mouth of Monocacy Rd., follow it to the end and to an unimproved parking area for access to the canal and to the Monocacy River. Lunch: Fuddruckers, 12111 Darnestown Rd., Gaithersburg MD 20878, . From the parking area, head out to Rt. 28 southbound, the restaurant will be on the left just after crossing Quince Orchard Rd.

From the parking lot, walk downriver for an hour and a half along the tow-path, turn around and come back. Directions: Get a map from MapQuest for Point of Rocks MD. Whether you come from Virginia north on Rt. 15 from Leesburg, or from Maryland south on Rt. 15 from Frederick, turn onto Rt. 28 east into Point of Rocks. Take a quick right onto service roadway leading down to C&O canal and boat launch area under the Rt. 15 bridge. Lunch: Aroma House, 1595 Bowis Dr, Point of Rocks, MD 21777, . Exiting from the parking area turn right onto Rt .28. The restaurant will be on the left in a small shopping center about a mile down the road.

From the parking lot, walk upriver for 1.5-hours and return. Directions: Get a map from MapQuest for Point of Rocks MD. Whether you come from Virginia north on Rt. 15 from Leesburg, or from Maryland south on Rt. 15 from Frederick, turn onto Rt. 28 east into Point of Rocks. On this loop, everyone hikes at their own pace for 2-hours, turns around, and returns to the starting point no later than 2:pm. Park and meet in the commuter lot near the Marc Train station. From the parking lot, walk toward the river and turn to the left onto the tow-path. Hike for 2-hours and return. Directions: Get a map from MapQuest for Brunswick MD. Whether you come from Virginia up Rt. 672 from Rt. 9, or from Maryland via Rt. 340 and Rt. 17, at the traffic circle turn onto S. Maryland Ave., left onto Potomac St., right onto N. Maple St., and downhill past train station and into parking lot. Lunch: If you feel venturesome, try one of the restaurants near the train station. Otherwise, head up to the shopping center on Rt. 464. From parking lot, head back to traffic circle, head north on Rt. 17 (away from Potomac River Bridge), turn right at traffic light onto Rt. 464. There will be a Roy Rogers and a Subway in the shopping center, but you might want to check out the Green Country Inn, 620 Souder Rd, Brunswick MD 21716, .

On this loop, everyone hikes at their own pace for 1.5-hours, turns around, and returns to the starting point no later than 1:pm. Park and meet in the commuter lot near the Marc Train station. From the parking lot, walk toward the river and turn to the right onto the tow-path, hike for 1.5-hours and return. Directions: Get a map from MapQuest for Brunswick MD. Whether you come from Virginia up Rt. 672 from Rt. 9, or from Maryland via Rt. 340 and Rt. 17, at the traffic circle turn onto S. Maryland Ave., left onto Potomac St., right onto N. Maple St., and downhill past train station and into parking lot. Lunch: If you feel venturesome, try one of the restaurants near the train station. This is not an optional detour for hikers or bikers. In this section of the canal, barges entered the river and the towpath was a narrow path at the foot of the cliffs. Repeated floods have destroyed the towpath and it is not passable. You must take the detour. Furthermore, there is an additional 5-mile loop detour during the week that extends the detour to Spring Dell Rd. (the blue line on the TOPO map). On this loop, everyone hikes at their own pace for 5-hours, turns around, and returns to the starting point no later than 3:pm. Directions: Take I-270 to I-70 west, merge onto I-68 westbound past Hancock, to exit 68 turning left to Orleans Rd NE, turn left onto High Germany Rd., proceed into Little Orleans and onto canal, turn right just before canal into park and parking. Lunch: The one and only building/restaurant in Little Orleans, restaurant will be on the right as you leave town. It doesn’t look fantastic, but the food was excellent on a previous trip. On this loop, everyone hikes at their own pace for 3-hours, turns around, and returns to the starting point no later than 4:pm. Park and meet at the park at Little Orleans, proceed to the canal and hike upriver for 3-hours and return.
