Two options: with at least two drivers, this will be a Point-to-Point Hike from US Route 522 north to VA Route 725 parking. This is an extreme 5-hour, 8-9 mile point-to-point with a 1,500-foot gain. Otherwise, it will be a Loop Hike from US Route 522 north to Denton Shelter and return. Based on PATC Map #8, this is an extreme 5-hour, 10-mile loop with a 1,000-foot gain going out and a 700-foot gain coming back. Saturday, November 12, 2005, 8:00 A.M., Linden VA 22642, Hiking the Appalachian Trail, self-guided group hike. Two options: with at least two drivers, this will be a Point-to-Point Hike from Rt. 725 parking lot, north to Rt. 638 Parking Lot #7. Based on PATC Map #8, this is a difficult 3-hour, 6 mile point-to-point with a 1,500-foot gain. Otherwise, it will be a Loop Hike from Route 638 Parking Lot #7 south to Manassas Gap Shelter and return. This is a moderate 3-hour, 6-mile loop with a 300-foot gain going out and a 900-foot gain coming back. See the instructions elsewhere on this page to register as a driver/hiker. Saturday, November 19, 2005, 8:00 A.M., Linden VA 22642, Hiking the Appalachian Trail, self-guided group hike. Two options: with at least two drivers, this will be a Point-to-Point Hike from Route 638 Parking Lot #7 north to Route 601 Trailhead parking north of Rt. 50. Based on PATC Map #8, this is a moderate 3-4 hour, 7-8 mile hike with a 700-foot gain. Even with a side trip to Dick’s Dome shelter, the gains in this hike are not overly strenuous and almost the entire second half of the hike is a gradual downhill. Otherwise, it will be a Loop Hike from Route 638 Parking Lot #7 north to Sky Meadows State Park and return. This is a moderate 7-8 mile loop with a 500-foot gain going out and a 600-foot gain coming back. This hike will connect to the North Ridge Trail in Sky Meadows State Park, but will not descend to the Park Visitor’s Center. See the instructions elsewhere on this page to register as a driver/hiker. Meet at 8:00 a.m. in the north parking lot of the Vienna Metro, bring adequate water. Directions to drop off return shuttles: Take I-66 west to exit 23 for Delaplane and RT 17 north. Go to RT 50 and turn left at the light. Turn right onto RT 601. Note that there are two exits to RT 601 and if you take the first exit, you will turn right again at the stop sign. The driveway to the parking lot is barely noticeable, so drive slowly up the hill and look for a very small dark brown wood sign for the trailhead parking lot on the left. Directions to Parking Lot #7: Go back down RT 601 and turn left onto RT 50. Turn right at the light onto RT 17. A short distance past Sky Meadows State Park, turn right onto RT 688. Take RT 688 to RT 55 and turn right. Turn right onto RT 638 at Linden. Take RT 638 to parking lot #7 which will be on your right. Directions to optional lunch after hike: Take RT 638 to RT 55 and turn right. The Apple House restaurant will be on the right just past the interchange for I-66. Use this interchange to return to the metro area.

Two options: with at least two drivers, this will be a Point-to-Point Hike from Route 601 Trailhead parking north to VA Route 7, Snicker’s Gap VDOT Commuter Parking Lot. Based on PATC Map #8, this is an extreme 7-hour, 14-mile point-to-point with a 4,200-foot gain. Otherwise, it will be a Loop Hike from Route 601 Trailhead parking north to Rod Hollow Shelter and return. Two options: with at least two drivers, this will be a Point-to-Point Hike from Snickers Gap VDOT Commuter Lot north to VA Route 9. Based on PATC Map #7, this is an extreme 7-hour, 14-mile point-to-point with a 2,700-foot elevation gain. Otherwise, it will be a Loop Hike from Snickers Gap VDOT Commuter Lot north to Devil’s Racecourse and return. Based on PATC Map #5, this is an extreme 7-hour, 14-mile point-to-point with a combined elevation gain of 2,500 feet. Otherwise, it will be a Loop Hike from Old National Pike north to US Route 40 and return. This is a tough 5-hour, 10-mile loop with a combine gain of 1,200 feet going out and 800 feet coming back. Based on PATC Map #1, this is a moderate 6-hour, 11-12 mile point-to-point with a 1,100-foot elevation gain. Most of the elevation gain will be in the first two miles of the hike as the hike moves up the mountain to the ridge. The remainder of the hike is along the ridge and then a downhill to the river and another two miles of riverside walking to the bridge.
